I can’t believe it has been almost one year since my last blog post! It was time to get back into the blogging world and what better way than with my favourite pieces from Dreamers & Drifters latest collection. I am loving off the shoulder pieces at the moment and they are so practical for the breast feeding mum. My other favourite thing about this blog post has got to be my new cute 3 month old addition who I couldn’t help but bring into these pics. Welcome to the blog my darling Eden-Mae! If I close my eyes for just a second, it all comes back to me. The whitest sand, the bluest sea, the warmest sun, the tallest palm trees.

My dream to spend a week in the Maldives for our honeymoon had finally come true. I had seen all the photos and heard all about this tropical paradise but sometimes you think it just cant possibly be quite as good as everyone says. My husband now reminds me of my face and the words I said as we pulled into our island for our weeks stay, “This is beyond a dream”.

We flew from Perth to Singapore with a quick stopover and straight to Malé. Malé airport itself is on an island and once walking out of the airport doors you are engulfed in the tropical heat. From there your resort will pick you up and transfer you to your island by speed boat. Even the journey from the airport to your island is magical, when you see the scattered lagoons of turquoise water accompanied by beautifully crafted water villas all along the ocean you know you are somewhere pretty special.

On arrival a cold towel and local welcoming drink refresh you before you are walked to your villa. The friendly staff guide you through the island pointing out all the activities along the way. We booked to stay in the water villas. They come with your own outdoor bathtub and private staircase, which leads straight down into the sea. The room was cooled from the air con and perfectly fresh for its new guests. A bottle of champagne on ice ready to be popped.

The Water villas are on the East Side of the island and in the mornings this side of the island experiences low tide. The Maldives sit on zero degrees latitude, which sees water temperature move between 28-30 degrees most of the year, it’s like swimming in a beautiful warm bath. The weather is tropical, which means hot, humid and dry. Maldives is, however, dominated by monsoons and the islands get rainfall from July to August and from November to March. One afternoon a large dark cloud was sweeping over the horizon. It was an amazing show of lightning and rain. The rain hit the water hard turning it from translucent to opaque. We sat on our balcony and watched it come and go. It was something we did not expect to see but so glad we did. There is really nothing this place can do that’s not beautiful.

The best thing was that every morning I would wake just before sunrise and slip out of our door to sit on the edge of our deck feet hanging, and greet the morning fish and pink skies as the sun rose. I will never forget the magic of the sunrises in the Maldives and sleeping above the sea, it was serenely still and calm and the constant lapping of the ocean soothed your body, mind and soul. The feeling is hard to describe in words but something I think can only be felt.

Each morning some regular fish and unexpected visitors would swim slowly past and I would watch as I sipped my cup of tea. The first morning we were so lucky to see a big beautiful stingray nestling in the sand just below us. The water in the morning was a translucent blue, so clear you could see everything beneath you. It was only when you fell into the sea for a morning swim that you could see your neighbours, they too appreciating the peaceful beauty of the lagoon. The water villas design was for pure privacy and relaxation. It felt like we had our own private lagoon in which to explore, the only thing we shared it with was the striped tropical fish that made home under our staircase.

There was an array of resturants to choose from on the island, most situated on jettys above the sea. Breakfast was included with the Water Villas and was served as a gourmet buffet catering for all tastes. It included fresh juices and fruit with home made yoghurts, muesli and granola. Personal chefs would cook you your eggs, pancakes or waffles however you wanted them with a spread of beautiful breads and pastries for an after brekky treat.

After brekky the day is yours to choose. There are many dive and snorkeling tours, water sports, jet ski’s, canoe’s and stand up paddle boards (SUP) to hire. There was also the options of a day spa, tennis and basketball courts and gym to fill your days. We would choose a different activity each day. The snorkeling tour is a MUST. You are taken out on a small traditional boat in the middle of the deep blue Indian Ocean. The boat will stop at local reef spots and local guides will jump off the boat with you and swim around the reef pointing out hiding Moray eels, turtles, tropical fish and groups of huge inquisitive stingrays that swim beneath you. I have never swam with so much sea life. We decided to do our activities in the morning and would often get back to the island around lunch time.

We would then grab a coconut from the friendly beach bar waiter, have a nibble to eat and head back to our water villa for an afternoon of reading, relaxing and swimming from our deck. In the afternoons we would take a slow walk around to the other side of the island and enjoy happy hour cocktails as we watched the sun set across the open ocean. The sunsets just as spectacular as the morning rise. On this side of the island every night you can feed the stingrays after dinner and on the water villa side you can see the reef sharks feeding. It’s amazing to see these animals so close to shore.

The Maldives was a once in a lifetime holiday for us, the feeling etched into our minds. It was surreal and we felt lucky being in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. So when your deciding on what you would like your guests to give as a wedding present, your kitchen will always be there for you to renovate, those crystal glasses you will maybe use a few times a year sure, but to see, experience and feel such natural beauty is surely once in a lifetime. We are so grateful to have seen with our own eyes.

I absolutely love this outfit from Dreamers & Drifters, it came in perfect timing for the cooler days of Winter, the jumper is so soft and warm and the skirt is SO comfortable. Don’t be afraid to wear loose pieces together to give a more bohemian feel. Add a hat and some sandals/boots and you have the perfect Winter Sunday outfit.

In 2 months time it will be my dads 1 year anniversary that he left me for heaven. So I thought it about time with almost a year gone by, I share how losing someone close has changed me. Who knows maybe it will help someone else who is in a time of grief, or maybe if you are lucky enough to have not lost anyone it will help you appreciate and make the most of every day of your life.

Firstly, these photos were taken in the first few days of Jan 2015 on Summer holidays in my most favourite place and on my most favourite beach in the world Busselton in the South West of WA. I am lucky enough that my Mum & Dad built us a holiday house in this beautiful little town. It was their dream home to spend many holidays and retirement in. They had the block of land for 30 years while raising my 3 brothers and I and then finally were able to build the beautiful beach house 5 years ago and we spent many holidays and weekends enjoying family time right infront of the beautiful bay. All these holidays now treasured memories. It was Dads favourite place to be “seeing the sunset over the horizon” as he said to me in his hospital bed. The day before these photos were taken we released Dad’s ashes out into the sea right infront of our beach house and it was just magic – no words can explain.

After my dad died after my intense grief I made small changes to my life to help me cope. A lot of people have commented how “strong” I am and I always dismissed It saying “you would be too if it happened to you, you just keep going on” but now when I look back I do a lot of little things every day to keep me happy. Because if I’m not happy the grief will overcome me and I will not look at dads death in the most positive way I can.

As many people say when someone dies, dads death changed my whole world and my life will never be the same again. I wish everyday I could have him back but his death gave my life more meaning, it gave me more soul and I am a deeper wholer person and I continue to learn from it every day.

I had always heard how good yoga was but never tried it. Well now was the perfect time and I absolutely love it. I’m sure everyone knows the benefits of yoga and for a person going through grief they are ten times fold, I am not flexible at all (or strong!!) but its not even about that for me. I’ve been going almost a year now and after a yoga class I feel exactly what they say stress relief, inner peace, increased energy and living with greater awareness.

I exercise every day whether it be a walk or run with my dog and some circuit exercises. And I’m sure you all know the benefits of exercise and all the happy endorphins you get after it..perfect for someone trying to cope with grief, it forces you to feel good even if you don’t want to because your hearts sad inside!. This gave me more energy so I went to bed earlier and got up earlier waking before my alarm.I’ve never had a gym membership, I love being outdoors in nature with fresh air and sun on my face it’s a good cure for anything.

I started to drink less and eat fresher. I spent many years partying way too hard with my friends and getting the most awful hangovers (I would literally throw up for 24 hrs) and after dad died I would get over emotional if I drank and feeling bad with a hangover the next day just makes your grief worse, it wasn’t making me happy so I stopped.

I started reading more and meditating and I feel good. I do know if I go to bed late, eat bad, miss my exercise I am not as happy as I can be so sticking to these things helps me.

Being down by the sea and going for a swim as much as I can also helps me, there is no feeling in the world like diving under a wave and hearing and seeing nothing at all for a moment while your immersed under water and then coming back up into the world with fresh breath and salty skin..its intoxicating, awakens your soul and I’m sure is a cure for many things.

There is no question I still feel pain, sometimes I’ll just be driving the car and I’ll be taken right back to sitting by my dads bedside in his dying days and I block it. I block it to be able to cope and I do these things every day to keep me happy to be able to cope and to make the most of being alive every day. One day I hope I wont have to block it but for now this is how I cope.

So almost one year on and I think I’m doing o.k and I’m happy, because how could you not be in this beautiful world and because I know dad would want me to be.

Below are some of my favourite quotes.

“We know that one does not come through grief unscathed. What we fully dont recognise is the power we have, after the first grief has passed, to choose what we are going to make of ourselves bereft though we are. There are people who after a devastating loss reshape their lives in heroic terms. We have choices to make and as survivors of crisis we have new strength, new power – if we chose to claim them”.

“The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The Challenge is to silence the mind”

“There are only two ways to live your life, one is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as if everything is”

“With freedom, books, flowers and the moon, who could not be happy”

Every second year I head to my husbands home town for Chrissy. If you havent recognised it by the photos it is WA’s largest outback city Kalgoorlie! It’s a long 6 hour drive from Perth away next to not much else but red dirt and bush. Every time we head down my Mother n Law gets super excited at all the new spots shes been checking out for my for ‘for the dreamers’ photo shoots!..I absolutely love their excitement and each time I visit all the fam hop in a van or 4wd and off we go to explore some untouched photo locations. Each time everything we find is beyond perfect..It almost has the feel you could be travelling through the US desert to Vegas or something!.

Shout out to Widgie Tavern you have to stop there if your driving from Esperance to Kal – their burgers are Delish and very friendly service! 😉

Behind every great blogger theres a mini team making you look good, so for this shoot I want to thank Aunty Len Lens for driving us out bush and on salt lakes, Nanna dot for her snacks and company, Deb my awesome mother n law for scouting us great places and of course my photographer husband Sam.

I love being a Miles and I love Kal for everything it is!

See you in another 2 years 🙂
